1. Explore the word gay with Cambridge Dictionary Online and take a look
at synonyms with the Free Dictionary.
2. Read about Homophobia and Sexual Orientation in Schools on Teachernet.
3. Watch the video about gay teachers on TeachersTV.
4. Go further: read about homophobic abuse in schools on the Guardian website.

5. Reading comprehension. Article from The Guardian :
'Sir, are you queer?'
Before reading, look at the headline. Choose a synonym that you know for queer.
Try to reformulate the sub-heading to explain it to your friend. If you find this hard you can decode it with a
partner. Look for the subject of the sentence, the main verb(s) and the object(s) of those main verbs.
While reading, think about the following:
-
What is the main subject of this article?
-
Who is speaking?
-
What key information are we told?
-
What can I do with all this myself?
-
What is my personal opinion here?
After reading, you will need to work on words:
-
a pupil in his/her last two years of secondary school who attends a school for that particular age group only is a
....................-............................. ........................................ (2 words) or 1 hyphenated word (line 12)
.....................................
-
a school-wide campaign is a campaign which (give a definition).
-
a bully is someone who is ................... to others - the noun bullying means
intimidation.
-
Look up bully with Word
Reference and Merriam Webster.
-
The adjective girly is girl (N) + -y. Can you find an equivalent for boy? The suffix isn't the
same....
-
Is an overwhelming majority a) a very great majority or b) a very small majority?
-
The adjective overtly (l.23) looks like a French word with the same meaning. Which one?
-
Find out about the English actor Ian McKellen who
is mentioned in the article.
-
Stonewall is a lesbian, gay and bisexual rights charity founded in 1989 by, among others, Ian
McKellen.
Task (making a public announcement)
You are a headteacher and you have to prepare a short speech to raise awareness about homophobic bullying in your
school. What will you say to the whole school? You can prepare your speech in pairs if this helps you.
Going further
Read a recent DfES (now Department for children, schools and families) brochure about tackling
homophobia in schools : how can pupils be heard? What do we need to know?
